Blog II Spring 2020

Upon completing my Associate's Degree, I am expecting many, many years of schooling. I aspire to become a psychiatrist, working and dealing with patients in a clinic. To become a licensed psychiatrist, I will first complete my Bachelor's Degree, which will prepare me for medical school. Medical school requires the passing of the Medical School Admission Test (MCAT), which is a standardized test, of which I will take practice test to ensure a satisfactory score. After finishing medical school and receiving my MD, I will then have to undergo a four-year residency program where I get gain real-life experience. I also must become licensed in the state of Florida, meaning that I will be required to take the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination, or USMLE. Once licensed, I will have to periodically renew my license through the state board, which may require medical education schoolwork. To be able to practice, I will acquire certification form the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in which shows future employers that I am qualified and educated to practice psychiatry.

The median job salary for psychiatrists is $220,000, which is more than enough to satisfy my needs. From what I have learned in my psychology class, I wish to become a psychiatrist instead of a psychologist because aside from salary, I am will be dealing with intense cases which I find extremely intriguing. Because of my interest in the field, I am looking forward to my many years of schooling because I know that it will enable me to help others while doing something I enjoy. I have always known that in my future career, I want to able to able to affect others in a positive way, and with psychiatry, I will be changing people's lives for good.
